I am in a similar situation at the moment. I am trying to understand more low level concepts and techniques and to use them efficiently. I totally understand what you mean about overcomplicated solutions - and to be honest open source can be almost as bad as closed source in this regard. Even Linux (in the complete Distribution sense) is over complicated and has too many layers and components.

If you want something that has just what you actually want from a modern OS then check out Haiku OS. It is missing some userland stuff (but active ports/developments are in progress) and is a little immature, but you can really tell the difference of not having bloat and everything being somewhat unified (while still being flexible, unlike Windows).

I really like a lot of things about Haiku and there is no denying it has a huge amount of potential. In my opinion it is only a year away from breaking out of the "hobby OS" group into the "serious OS" group.

I would love to see libraries take a more free culture approach to what they serve / inform their patrons about. At least here in Norway it seems that librarians tend to see commercial and expensive books as "better" then cheap or free books (I almost went through a library education in Norway. We students also only learned to be the users of commercial library software, not to understand how the programs works)

I have listen to at least two of the books of Scott Sigler, guess he haven't made much money of me yet, but now his name (as well as J.C. Hutchins) is on my radar when he releases something I can be able to buy. Be that a ticket to a movie, an audiobook or a book. I would like to see more of the authors of the world be more aware of the possibilities of the internet, and the librarians be more aware of the authors like Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchins.

I think it would be a great idea to have free (CC licensed or other) audiobooks available in public libraries, however I think that libraries are probably not aware of their availability or popularity.

The last free audio book I listened to was Earthcore by Scott Sigler. I heard about it on Linux Outlaws. You could ask Fab if he has listened to many other books, he is on Identica and in the LO forums.

Any time, I really got involved with the first book during the first few chapters.

You did reply very fast! You use a lot of time on keeping up to date with your fans on the internet?

I used to run Gentoo some time ago, guess I wanted to see what kind of other solutions that was available. Perhaps it is time for me to install Gentoo again.

One might say that Arch Linux is a mix of Gentoo and Debian, but don't quote me on that. It is possible to install pre-built binaries but also to easily custom compile packages from source as well, so it's the best of both worlds, I think.

But I'm always interested in different solutions to the same problem, and this is why I think the Free Software community have a better starting point then commercial software vendors. When we solve a problem or develop several solutions we can pick and chose the one that best fits the situation.

What is your opinion on Gentoo?

It is the type of distro you would be interested in, but why Arch over Gentoo? I prefer the Gentoo community personally ( I would not say I am really a member yet).

Good choice! I have ordered one just some minutes ago. :) And Nokia is bad. They had closed factory in Bochum and took all the money with them. That's why they have a new slogan: "Disconnecting People"... Hehehe....

It's not an ideal situation when someone have to resort to workarounds, not when there is no real need to do so. If the content providers want to reach a large audience, they must understand that blocking someone because they live on the wrong side of some border, is just stupid.

Is the only way we can send a message, to not consume the content? I can't see a good solution to this problem.

Welcome to Australia!

...Everybody not in the US wishes they had Hulu. I want to buy a month of VPS time (turning 18 soon so I can get a credit card so I can sign up!) to see if the VPN/Proxy performance is decent.

It is total crap. And you are right - in the end we don't miss services like Last.fm and they can go to hell for all we care.
